We intitially showed work at the “Sharing our Shores” symposium 0n October 19, 2013. This second showing includes more works and for me consists of smaller studies. My larger piece Bird Sanctuary: Shoal Harbour was previously committed to “Current Threads: 2014” now at the Nanaimo Art Gallery.
The symposium was hosted by the newly formed society, Friends of Shoal Harbour, at the Mary Winspear Community Centre in Sidney BC. Friends of Shoal Harbour hope to foster public support for and enjoyment of the 1931 Migratory Bird Sanctuary encompassing Roberts Bay and Tsehum Harbour on the east side of the Saanich Peninsula, while recognizing thst the goal requires a willingness of everybody to “Share our Shores” not only among the variety of human users but also with the many other species that depend on them.
Much of the discussion at the symposium was science-based and utilitarian but some of the emotional/spiritual components were represented by a poetry reading and an exhibition of art works depicting Peninsula shorelines. The exhibition was on view only for the few hours of the symposium but will be exhibited again January 2014.
